We are creating a safer environment at Rock for People together with Konsent and with you! If you see harassment, unwanted groping or perhaps violence, stick to the 5D rules.
Attempt to distract the victim and thus the attention of the attacker. Just ask a simple question: “Do you know where the nearest ToiToi is?” or a straightforward “Well, shall we go away?”
Ask someone else for help. Invite a friend, a Rock for People security guard, or ask a bar attendant to help.
If it’s safe to do so, you can film the situation, take pictures or write down what happens. Of course, then only use the recording with the victim’s permission if they want to take the situation further.
Wait until the incident is over before asking the victim how they are feeling or what they need now.
This is usually the first thing that comes to mind. “Stop” or perhaps “Stop it” works best when we address specific behaviors. But if you don’t feel like it, feel free to try any of the previous D’s.
Always decide which “D” to use based on how you feel at the time and which way makes sense for you. Always keep your safety in mind.
The 5D rule is designed to help bystanders respond safely and effectively to harassment without putting themselves at unnecessary risk.
