Alternative band The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa is returning to the concert stage – they will play their first-ever gig after a long eight-year hiatus at Rock for People 2024!

Jan P. Muchow, one of the most prominent Czech composers, still maintains the brand of The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa as the only one of the four founders of the band. Today it is a two-person project with singer Katerina Winterova, an actress at the Prague National Theatre. Muchow also became, as he says, “for lack of judgment” an actor in the 1990s when he appeared in the generational film Whisper. Like the recordings of The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa, this film was one of the hallmarks of the 1990s in the Czech Republic.

Muchow even dropped out of school because of the band. That’s when he decided he had about five years to make it in music. And he succeeded, even though the original line-up of The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa didn’t have a long life.

It made it to another special concert at the Planetarium in Prague in 1994, where it started to transform in sound, but then broke up. Muchow then discovered the capabilities of electronics, which foreshadowed his subsequent compositional signature. “The sampler opened up new possibilities for me, it allowed me to play, for example, on the central heating,” he said in 1997.

And while listeners of The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa will fall asleep to the free tempo of the songs – and some critics say they will safely fall asleep to Muchow’s music – the composer reportedly never dreams of composing, say, a symphony. He’s more likely to run out onto the football field at night. Before one European championship, midfielder Vladimír Šmicer (in a dream) recommended him for the national team. “I persuaded Brückner that it was nonsense, that I couldn’t take it. But then I had to fly around the pitch and couldn’t keep up.”

As a composer, Jan P. Muchov managed countless things. His composing ranges between artistic and purely utilitarian work. He composed for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai and has already won four Czech Lions for film music.
