The Wombats UK

For more than two decades, Liverpool’s The Wombats have been serving up indie rock hits that stick in your head. Their music plays with various genres, from sparkling tech rock to sci-fi pop, futuristic fuzz rock to blues rock ‘n’ roll with a touch of disco and hip-hop.

Since they emerged as leading lights of the late-’00s indie rock scene with 2007 debut A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation, Matthew Murphy (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Tord Øverland Knudsen (bass), and Dan Haggis (drums) have maintained an incredible upward momentum. The third album, Glitterbug (2015), found favor among the current TikTok generation, and the hit “Greek Tragedy” went viral several times. The album Fix Yourself, Not the World (2022) cemented their position, garnering over 2.5 billion streams. It’s no wonder that the trio has had a string of successful performances at renowned festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, and Lollapalooza.

The band stands out for its adventurous sound. They mask the complexity and depth of their lyrics with playful melodies, and they do it brilliantly. Their characteristic small and varied guitar riffs are complemented by occasional pauses that show how well the band can balance the blurred fuzz effect with short moments of breath. Their latest album, Oh! The Ocean (2025), is in the same vein, offering an escape from the mundane. The Wombats are proof that wit and timeless hits resonate across generations.
